Community Safety & Inclusivity Update

We have heard concerns regarding allegations of harassment and discrimination in our community spaces. This includes venues that we have partnered with for many of our past events. We want to make it clear that there is no place for such behavior in our community. We stand in solidarity with any individual or group that has been impacted by these experiences.

We acknowledge that the number of public safe spaces for our local community to gather is limited. However, these spaces should always be accountable for their actions. They must also take responsibility for any lack of action that causes direct harm. As our community changes and grows, we expect these spaces to adapt. They should strive to provide an educated, safe, and welcoming environment.

Project Background

On August 19th, we began a project to address safety concerns. We also wanted to tackle the lack of inclusivity. This initiative followed an incident experienced by one of our transgender board members after one of our events. We engaged in this discussion and many others with community leaders over the past few months. As a result, we have decided to reach out to multiple venues. Our goal is to pinpoint specific areas of concern and improvement.

How the Project Will Work

Step 1: Ask these spaces to provide their own questions for the community at large.

Step 2: Gathering these questions and combining them with our own. Then request both feedback and personal narratives of your time spent in these spaces.

This project began with a focus on our community members who are transgender and/or assigned female at birth (AFAB). However, we encourage everyone to share their experiences. This invitation is extended regardless of whether or not these identities are relevant.

We believe in the power of data as much as we do in individual experiences. We hope that this collection of information can be used. It should create a clear list of expectations for these spaces moving forward. We also aim to set guidelines. We want to address any changes through transparency, accountability, and future monitoring or data collection.

Timeline & Next Steps

Our goal is to have the survey portion go live before the end of December. We intend to have the next phase of discussions with venue owners, staff, and community leaders in the new year.

If you have any questions or concerns, you are welcome to contact us. Please reach out via email or social media to share what you would like voiced in this project.
